KITTENS ABANDONED ON THE DOORSTEP

Cats in Action co-founder and Outreach Director Erica Roewade came home from a family dinner to find a cardboard box on her front porch with the word “KITTENS” written on it. Inside were four little 5-week-old brown tabby kittens, huddled together inside a smaller box. The kittens were frozen in fear, gazing up at Erica as she opened the surprise delivery.

The “Porchlight kittens”  were hungry, thirsty, underweight, and dirty. Thankfully, Cats in Action volunteer Astrid Fingerhut was able to come right over, vaccinate and deworm them and give them a bath. Unfortunately these kinds of scenarios happen to people who are known rescuers. It isn’t shocking, but it’s never convenient. Cats in Action does not have a brick-and-mortar shelter.

Suddenly receiving unvetted kittens is disruptive, stressful and costly. Vaccines and high-calorie kitten food are very expensive.

Since landing on Erica’s doorstep, the Porchlight kittens (aka Apple Pie, Maple Leaf, Pumpkin and Autumn) have done very well! They are chubby, playful, thriving and doing all of the normal, rambunctious kitten things. Soon they will be spayed/neutered and hopefully receive intake at one of the local shelters.

We understand that it can be difficult finding intake for cats and kittens when shelters are so full and sometimes people panic not knowing what to do. We only hope that whoever left these kittens knows that they are safe and that Cats in Action will gladly spay their mama, so she doesn’t have any additional litters.
